I was amazed by <em>Nippon Maru<\/em>, the ship that took me on a journey across ASEAN countries. It was a massive and luxurious vessel\u2014like a five-star hotel gliding on the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Jakarta, the ship sailed to Phuket, Thailand, a two-day journey. We stayed in Phuket for three days before heading to Malaysia, which took another two days. After Malaysia, we arrived in Singapore in a day and stayed there for three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Singapore, I had the chance to visit several places, including the National University of Singapore, the Institute of Technical Education, and experienced a homestay in Kampung Kembangan. Afterward, we headed to Brunei Darussalam, which took two days by sea and stayed there for three days. From Brunei, our journey continued to Japan, where we stayed for a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"786\" height=\"1052\" src=\"https:\/\/ourislands.id\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/Screen-Shot-2025-09-19-at-11.13.37.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-792\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourislands.id\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/Screen-Shot-2025-09-19-at-11.13.37.png 786w, https:\/\/ourislands.id\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/Screen-Shot-2025-09-19-at-11.13.37-768x1028.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all the luxury food on board, I brought my own <strong>sago<\/strong>. While I was eating it, a friend asked, \u201cWhat kind of sago is that?\u201d I was unsure how to answer\u2014sago is just sago. But since I received it from a friend named Osok, I replied, \u201cThis is Osock sago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each country left a different impression. I was most struck by <strong>Singapore<\/strong> for its cleanliness and city planning. <strong>Japan<\/strong> impressed me with its punctuality and orderliness. But my most memorable experience was in <strong>Brunei Darussalam<\/strong>, a small but very wealthy country. I visited the <strong>Istana Nurul Iman<\/strong>, home of the Sultan, just a few kilometers from Bandar Seri Begawan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also had the opportunity to meet and speak with His Royal Highness Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah, and even had a meal with <strong>Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah<\/strong>. After the dialogue, we were taken to the royal garage. I was stunned\u2014hundreds of luxury cars lined up neatly, about <strong>250 luxury car collections from all over the world<\/strong>, including Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, and a Rolls-Royce Silver Spur Limo coated in 24-karat gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This journey across six ASEAN countries and Japan expanded my <strong>horizons and worldview<\/strong>. I realized that there are many kinds of people living in different parts of the world, with diverse lifestyles, characters, and beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I learned that <strong>Japanese people<\/strong> are generally friendly, punctual, hardworking, and humble. I also noticed that <strong>Filipinos<\/strong> resemble the <strong>Malay Indonesians<\/strong> in appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More importantly, the journey became a turning point in <strong>discovering who I truly am\u2014my identity as a child of Papua<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"929\" src=\"https:\/\/ourislands.id\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/Screen-Shot-2025-09-19-at-11.09.03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-794\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many participants from Japan and other ASEAN countries approached me. In several countries we visited, people thought I was from Africa. Common questions included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cDo you have a family from Africa?\u201d<br>\u201cNo. I\u2019m from <strong>Irian Jaya, Indonesia<\/strong>,\u201d I answered.<br>\u201cHow long have you been living in Indonesia?\u201d<br>\u201cI was born in Indonesia.\u201d<br>\u201cWere your parents also born in Indonesia?\u201d<br>I nodded.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I understood why they asked. I stood out physically. Out of 310 participants in the program, <strong>I was the only one with dark skin and curly hair<\/strong>, features typically associated with people of African descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I explained that <strong>Indonesia<\/strong> is a vast archipelagic country made up of two major ethnic groups: <strong>Malay and Melanesian<\/strong>. I represent the <strong>Melanesian peoples<\/strong> who inhabit the island of <strong>Irian Jaya (Papua)<\/strong>\u2014a large island home to <strong>255 indigenous ethnic groups<\/strong>, each with its own language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This journey across Southeast Asia marked the beginning of <strong>my self-discovery and personal transformation<\/strong>. Without realizing it, my attitude and appearance changed after the student exchange program.
