Day 1 – Journey into the Heart of the Rainforest
Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Sorong, where your guide will welcome you before departing towards the remote village of Malagufuk.
Travelling by comfortable 4WD Toyota Hilux, the journey itself offers a fascinating introduction to the landscapes of Southwest Papua as you leave the city behind and venture deeper into one of the world’s last remaining pristine rainforests.
Upon arriving at the entrance to the protected forest, your expedition continues on foot along a wooden boardwalk that winds through the lush tropical vegetation. This peaceful walk provides your first opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary biodiversity of the rainforest while listening to the sounds of New Guinea’s remarkable birdlife.
After reaching Malagufuk Village, you will check in at the guest house and have time to settle into your accommodation before enjoying lunch and a short period of relaxation.
During the afternoon, your first birdwatching excursion begins around the village and nearby forest trails. Depending on weather conditions and bird activity, you may already encounter several endemic species, including your first Birds of Paradise displaying high in the forest canopy.
As daylight fades, enjoy dinner before setting out on an exciting nocturnal rainforest walk.
The rainforest transforms completely after sunset. Equipped with flashlights and accompanied by experienced local guides, you will search for fascinating nocturnal wildlife including cuscuses, tree frogs, insects, geckos, sleeping birds and, with a little luck, elusive wallabies moving silently through the forest.
It is a magical introduction to one of the richest ecosystems on Earth.
Day 2 – Birds of Paradise Expedition
Throughout the morning, you will visit three carefully selected display sites, each offering different habitats and opportunities to observe several of Papua’s most iconic endemic species.
Among the highlights are the spectacular Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise, the elegant Lesser Bird of Paradise, the tiny but dazzling King Bird of Paradise and the magnificent Magnificent Riflebird. Depending on seasonal conditions and bird activity, many additional endemic species may also be encountered.
The surrounding rainforest is equally rewarding, with excellent opportunities to observe Western Crowned Pigeons, Eclectus Parrots, Palm Cockatoos, kingfishers, fruit doves, hornbills and numerous other rainforest birds that make this region one of the world’s premier birdwatching destinations.
After returning to the guest house for a well-earned lunch, there will be time to relax before heading back into the forest during the afternoon.
The changing light often reveals different species and behaviours, providing outstanding opportunities for photography and wildlife observation.
Following dinner, those wishing to continue exploring may join another guided night excursion in search of nocturnal birds and rainforest wildlife, adding yet another unforgettable dimension to the Malagufuk experience.

Day 3 – In Search of the Papuan Pitta
After breakfast, your final morning focuses on one of New Guinea’s most sought-after endemic birds.
Accompanied by your guides, you will visit a dedicated Papuan Pitta site, carefully selected after years of local knowledge and field experience.
The brilliantly coloured Papuan Pitta is one of the true jewels of the rainforest and a prized observation for birdwatchers visiting Papua. While searching for this remarkable species, you may also encounter Hooded Pittas, kingfishers, pigeons, parrots and many other forest specialists that inhabit this exceptionally rich ecosystem.
After returning to the guest house, lunch will be served before it is time to prepare for departure.
Following check-out, you will walk once more along the rainforest boardwalk before boarding your 4WD vehicle for the return journey to Sorong.
Your guide will transfer you directly to your hotel, bringing to a close an unforgettable three-day expedition through one of Indonesia’s most extraordinary wilderness areas. Although the journey ends here, the memories of Malagufuk’s pristine rainforest and its spectacular Birds of Paradise will remain with you long after you leave Papua.
