This is not mass tourism. This is a true wilderness experience and genuine cultural encounters.

Imagine walking across the longest wooden bridge in Indonesia, entering an ancient and untouched tropical rainforest, surrounded by a natural orchestra of birds echoing from every direction. The humid air brushes your skin, the scent of forest soil fills your breath, and in the distance, the soft call of a Bird of Paradise can be heard.

This is Malagufuk—a small village in the heart of the Klasow Valley, Sorong, Southwest Papua—now recognized as one of the best locations for observing Birds of Paradise in the world.

Just one hour from Sorong City, this indigenous Moi community protects a rare ecosystem where Birds of Paradise still perform their natural courtship dances every morning and afternoon.

Here, you do not simply travel. You experience something rare in modern life: a return to nature in its purest form.

Package Highlights

Witness the Dance of Birds of Paradise Up Close

Malagufuk is a natural habitat for various species of lowland Birds of Paradise in Papua. In the early morning and late afternoon, as the light touches the forest canopy, these birds begin to dance—spreading their wings, leaping from branch to branch, and producing enchanting calls that can only be heard deep within Papua’s rainforest.

Guided by experienced local Moi guides, who have an intimate knowledge of the forest, you will have the opportunity to observe:

  • Lesser Bird of Paradise
  • King Bird of Paradise
  • Magnificent Bird of Paradise
  • Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise
  • Magnificent Riflebird
  • Trumpet Manucode
  • Glossy-mantled Manucode

Pristine Rainforest Adventure

The journey to the observation sites is not merely a transfer. It is an essential part of the experience itself.

  • Trek along natural forest trails
  • Walk across a 3.3-kilometer wooden bridge beneath towering rainforest canopies
  • Admire ancient giant trees with their striking and unique forms
  • Explore the natural habitat of Papua’s wildlife

Along the trail, you may encounter cassowaries moving silently through the forest, cuscus resting high in the canopy, echidnas foraging on the forest floor, tree kangaroos leaping between branches, vibrant giant butterflies, brilliantly colored snakes, and an extraordinary diversity of endemic birds found nowhere else on Earth.

Cultural Experience with the Moi Community

Beyond its extraordinary wildlife, Malagufuk offers a rare opportunity to connect with the indigenous Moi people — the traditional custodians of this rainforest.

For generations, the Moi community has lived in harmony with the forest, guided by customary laws that regulate land use, hunting practices, and the protection of sacred areas. Their relationship with nature is not symbolic. It is a living system of knowledge passed down through ancestral lineage.

During your stay, you will:

  • Stay in locally managed eco-homestays within the village
  • Share traditional meals prepared from forest and garden ingredients
  • Learn about customary land rights and forest stewardship
  • Hear stories of how the community protected their ancestral land from industrial development
  • Understand how birdwatching tourism supports conservation and local livelihoods

This is not staged cultural tourism.
It is an authentic encounter with a community that has chosen conservation as its path to the future.

Your visit directly contributes to sustaining indigenous land protection and ensuring that the forest and the Birds of Paradise remain protected for generations to come.
