Deep in the forests of Southwest Papua, Indonesia Malasigi Indigenous Village stands as a living guardian of nature and the cultural heritage of the Moi people. More than a destination, Malasigi is a living space where humanity, nature, and ancestral values remain deeply interconnected in a harmony that has endured through generations.

Malasigi offers three distinctive nature-based experiences: trekking through pristine forests to witness the graceful dance of the birds of paradise, exploring natural cave corridors shaped over centuries, and soaking in tranquil hot springs flowing gently in the heart of the rainforest. Yet, a journey to Malasigi is far more than a physical adventure—it is an inner encounter with a living indigenous culture that continues to breathe through ancestral wisdom.

Upon entering the village, visitors are welcomed not only by the warmth of the local community, but also by an intangible presence believed to be a spiritual greeting from the guardians of the land. One member of our group experienced this directly—an encounter understood as a reminder that the forests, waters, and soil of Malasigi remain under the watchful care of the Moi ancestors.

National recognition has further affirmed Malasigi’s significance. In 2024, Malasigi Indigenous Village was awarded First Place in the Emerging Tourism Village category at the Anugerah Desa Wisata Indonesia (ADWI). This achievement reflects Malasigi’s strength as a community-led ecotourism destination that upholds local wisdom, environmental sustainability, and indigenous stewardship.

In Malasigi, Moi culture is not reduced to symbolic rituals. Ancestral customs, beliefs, and values are passed down through generations and continue to guide everyday life. The harmonious relationship between people and nature is maintained through customary laws that protect forests, rivers, and sacred spaces. In return, nature provides balance and abundance.

The tourism experience in Malasigi feels authentic and deeply memorable. From cave exploration and soaking in natural hot springs to night-time river activities, each experience offers a level of purity rarely found elsewhere. More than a visit, Malasigi invites reflection—on caring for the earth, living in harmony with nature, and honoring ancestors as an integral part of life.

For overnight stays, Malasigi Indigenous Village offers two accommodation options: homestays and glamping. Both are thoughtfully designed to allow guests to stay close to nature while respecting the cultural values and traditions of the local community.
